It’s Ratcatcher’s Day
When : July 22nd
Ratcatcher’s Day commemorates the Pied Piper of Hamelin, the most infamous of Ratcatchers.
One of the most well known German folklores is the story of the Pied Piper of Hamelin. The town of Hamelin, Germany was infested by rats. The mayor promised to handsomely pay the Pied Piper, if he rid the town of rats. The Pied Piper played his flute. Lured by the magical music, all of the rats left town, and followed him. He played his music all the way down to the river. He waded into the river. The rats followed him and drowned. The mayor refused to pay him. So, one night when the townspeople were asleep, the Pied Piper played his music again. This time, the children of the town followed him all the way into a cave. Some versions for the legend vary here. In one version, the Pied Piper kept them there until he was paid by the town for his services. In most versions, the children were never to be seen again.
How many Rats were lured to the River? Estimates are upwards of a million!
If you see a Ratcatcher today, wish them Happy Ratcatcher’s Day!
The Origin of Ratcatcher’s Day:
We have yet to discover why July 22 was selected as the date for Ratcatcher’s Day.
According to the legend, the Pied Piper rid the town of Hamelin, Germany of rats on or around June 26, 1284. After the town mayor refused to make payment as promised, the Pied Piper returned to lure the children to a cave. In some versions of the legend, this occurred the next night. In others, he returned several weeks later. We speculate that “several weeks later” was July 22nd.

It’s National Junk Food Day
When : Always July 21st
To some people, every day is Junk Food Day. For the rest of us, National Junk Food Day is an opportunity to guiltlessly eat your favorite junk food.
Dietitians will tell you that junk food is any food that contains little nutritional value. We also include foods that are high in salts, fats, and sugars. In other words, junk food is all that tasty stuff that the dietitians, and Mom, consider to be bad for us.
On Junk Food Day, you get to eat anything you want. Eat any amounts that you want, too. Tomorrow, however, it’s back to a healthy diet.
Please Note: Junk food may be hazardous to your health. After all, mom knows what’s best for you. Do so at your own risk. That risk includes Mom saying: “I told you so!”

It’s Ugly Truck Day
When : Always July 20th
Beyond a doubt, Ugly Truck Day is a “guy thing”. Every guy can appreciate the importance of this day. Not to be left out, a fair number of the ladies appreciate (their) ugly truck, too! Ugly trucks are loved and cherished by their owners.
Sure, a brand new, shiny truck with all of the gadgets and features still working, is a great thing. But, an old, ugly truck is something to cherish with pride. It has character that a new truck sorely lacks. It has a long history of dents, bangs, and scratches, each with their own tale of how it was proudly earned. Most guys can tell you exactly how and where every dent and scratch occurred, making your ugly truck a walking history book.
On Ugly Truck Day, go out and take a drive around with a big, broad smile on your face. You can, and should, hold an Ugly Truck contest today. But, whatever you do, don’t wash or wax your truck today!

It’s National Caviar Day
When : July 18th
National Caviar Day suggests that something fishy is going on today. Just what’s all the roe about this day!?
Caviar is salted fish eggs, or “roe”. It is considered a delicacy. Caviar is enjoyed by the upper class, and those of us who occasionally can afford a little, just so we can say that we had some. Russian Caviar is reputed to be the very best, most sought after of all caviars. There’s red caviar and black caviar, along with other colors. Black is considered the best. Perhaps you should do a taste test.
The most prestigious, and best(??) caviar comes from sturgeon found in the Caspian Sea. But, other fish, including whitefish and salmon, are less expensive alternatives.
Which caviar truely tastes the best? We’ll let you be the judge.
Happy National Caviar Day!

It’s National Ice Cream Day
National Ice Cream Day – 3rd Sunday in July
Also, July is National Ice Cream Month
Plus, December 13 is Ice Cream Day -
When you get the urge for a snack on a hot, humid summer night, what’s the first thing that comes to your mind? That’s right….Ice Cream! Therefore, it’s only fitting that ice cream be given it’s own special day. On this day, we hope you enjoy an ice cream cone, a sundae, or a milk shake. Set the diet aside and splurge a little…have one of each!
In 1984, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed July as National Ice Cream Month. He also established National Ice Cream Day as the third Sunday in the month.
Ice cream is nutritious. A little heavy on the sugar and calories, ice cream is otherwise good for you. Its base ingredient is milk, which is loaded with healthy vitamins and minerals.
Did you know? Charles E. Minches of St. Louis, Missouri is credited with inventing the ice cream cone. On July 23, 1904 at the World’s Fair in St. Louis, he filled a pastry cone with two scoops of ice cream to make the first ice cream cone. There is some controversy over this claim. Italo Marchiony of New York City filed a patent for the ice cream cone months before the fair opened. And, he was selling lemon ice in comes as early as 1896.
About Ice Cream Day in December: There is also a celebration of Ice Cream Day on Decmeber 13th. We found no factual information about this day. We suspect that it evolved from some local event. Perhaps a school ice cream social somehow took on an undocumented, national recognition as a special day.

It’s Cow Appreciation Day
When : July 15th
Today is Cow Appreciation Day. And, that’s no bull! But, it is something to “Moo” about.
As I began my research for this day, I talked to my daughter about plans for this page. I was intending to comment in a nice way, about everything that cows give us. But, my daughter convinced me to simply talk about the dairy products.
Our appreciation for cows can be expressed in many ways. Some websites suggest you go out and give a cow a big hug and/or a kiss. While it might sound like fun, you don’t have to go to extremes to enjoy this special day. It can be as simple as pausing for a moment to to think about cows, and all that they do for us.
Now that we’ve had our moment of silence, it’s time to celebrate. Have an ice cold glass of milk. Add chocolate syrup, if you prefer. Then, fire up the grill, and cook some burgers or a steak. And, don’t forget to get your fill of cheese. Sorry, goat cheese is not allowed today.
Note: Restaurants and dairy companies celebrate this day by offering specials. Watch for them, and save.

It’s Bastille Day
When : July 14th
Happy Bastille Day and “Vive la France!”
Bastille Day commemorates modern France and French democracy. Bastille Day is a French holiday. But, you can celebrate it, too.
Bastille Day symbolizes the end of the constitutional monarchy, and the beginning of the democratic republic of France. To Frenchmen, Bastille Day is viewed as their liberation.
Bastille Day is actually called Fete de la Federation. In France, it is a holiday that is celebrated with military parades.
A Little (but not too much) Bastille Day History:
In the late 1700s, France was ruled by a king.
On July 14, 1789, there was an uprising against the constitutional monarchy, and the people stormed Bastille.
Bastille was actually a prison, and it was a symbol of the monarchy.
The goal was to create reconciliation for all of France, promote unity, and purse liberty from the monarchy.
This uprising ultimately led to the birth of democracy in France.
Fete de la Federation was first held on July 14, 1790, the first anniversary of the storming of the prison at Bastille.
