It’s Evaluate Your Life Day

When : Always October 19th

Evaluate Your Life Day is a bit scary. It sounds just a little bit too serious for my liking. And, what if I evaluate my life, and find out that I don’t like it????????

Well, for starters, you can then make positive changes.

Evaluate Your Life Day gives us the opportunity to pause and reflect upon our life, where it’s been, and where its going. C’mon, be honest with yourself. Are things going well? What is bothering you? What do you need, or want, to change? How’s your appearance? Are you gaining too much weight?

With a self evaluation, you can then make big changes to improve the quality of your life, as necessary. Or, if things are going well, just tinker with small adjustments.

We believe that  Evaluate Your Life Day is the beginning of a happier and healthier you!

It’s Wear Something Gaudy Day

When : Always October 17th

Wear Something Gaudy Day is your chance to really stick out in a crowd.

The word “gaudy” refers to something bright, gay, cheap, showy, outlandish, or otherwise not in good taste.

Have a little fun on this day. For just one day, forego fashion and style. Look for something to wear that’s really wild and wacky, and will stick out like a sore thumb wherever you go. If you don’t have anything like this in your wardrobe, perhaps a friend does.

Note: If you’re always garbed in gaudy attire, this is your day to look like everyone else!

It’s Sweetest Day

When: Third Saturday in October

Now here is a day dedicated just for your sweetie. It exists as an opportunity for you to recognize that sweet and special someone. It doesn’t matter who that person is, or what their relation to you. They just have to be “sweet” in order to get a little recognition.

Herbert Birch Kingston, a Cleveland, Ohio philanthropist and candy company employee started Sweetest Day. He wanted to bring happiness to orphans, shut-ins and under-privileged. His intent was to show these people that they were not forgotten.  In 1922, he started this holiday by giving candy and small gifts. He often used movie stars to distribute the gifts.

The popularity of this holiday quickly spread. Today, is celebrated with loved ones and friends. However, we encourage you to follow the intent of the original holiday, and find ways to give candy and small gifts to those in need.

It’s International Skeptics Day

When : January 13th, or October 13th or first Friday the 13th of the year

International Skeptics Day is the perfect day for you…the “doubting Thomas”.

Perhaps the earth isn’t really round!? Maybe, the sky isn’t truely blue!? Does he(she) really love me!? ……..These are the words and questions of the classical skeptic.

By definition, a skeptic is a person who questions or doubts facts and theories. He, or she, is a mis-believer. A skeptic does not accept the “Given”. If you are inclined to doubt things that you see or hear, then International Skeptics Day is for you.

If you practice a little, I’m sure we can make a good skeptic out of you. Go ahead, give it a try. And, what better day to practice skepticism, than  International Skeptics Day?

Origin of International Skeptics Day:

We suspect that a real skeptic created this day. And, they did so by first creating doubt about the date to celebrate this special day. We found three dates: January 13th, October 13th, and the first Friday of the year. While Friday the 13th sounds intriguing, we have our doubts……….

We encourage you to celebrate skeptics and skeptical behavior on all three dates!

There is some reference to this as an “International” day. True, there are skeptics organizations all over the world. However, we found no documentation of this day being celebrated anywhere outside of the U.S.

It’s Moment of Frustration Day

When : October 12th

Moment of Frustration Day is truely a frustrating day. We believe one of the most imporant reasons for today, is the opportunity to let your frustrations out. If you are not frustrated, count your blessings. Don’t use today to add to your frustrations. And whatever you do today, don’t find new things to be frustrated about.

Are you frustrated? ‘Cmon, let it out! We’ve got some suggestions on how to ease that moment of frustration in a harmless, healthy manner. Here are just some of them:

  • Go for a walk When faced with a frustrating situation, walk away from the situtation. Time and distance, will often help to eliminate the frustraion. The walk allows you to think about how to resolve it.
  • Take it outside and yell. Go out the back door, and do a little yelling. We suggest you do it away from others. Afterwards, you will feel much better.
  • Let your feelings out… If you need to cry, then cry.
  • Think…. consider what will ease or eliminate those frustrations. How can you resolve the problem?
  • Talk… let your feelings out to someoneyou can confide in. If it’s a frustration about a person, talk with them. Let them know how you feel.
  • Seek help. Use a frined, a family member, or a professional to help you.

Important Note: We encourage you to let your frustrations out in a constructive way,  but never in an angered way. Rather, use this day to release frustrations and anger in a safe and sensible manner. Also, drinking and drugs never solves things. They can only make matters worse.

Here’s wishing you a very Happy Moment of Frustration Day. As an old song goes, Don’t Worry, Be Happy!

It’s Columbus Day

When: Second Monday in October

For decades and decades, American history books and school teaching told us that Christopher Columbus discovered America. What those books and teachings did not give credit to was the fact that Native Americans were already here first and truly discovered America. It also gave little mention to the fact that Nordic explorers had travelled down the eastern cost of Canada thousands of years earlier.

Today, we celebrate Columbus day for what it accurately is. Columbus did discover the existence of the New World for Europeans who until then, believed the world was flat and ended somewhere in the Atlantic. And, the focus is more upon discovery of the “New World”, and less upon Columbus himself.

Did You Know? Columbus day is sometimes referred to as “Discoverer’s Day”.

Some key facts (in case you forgot them since grade school):

  • Columbus Discovered America in 1492. He originally set sail on August 3, 1492, but had trouble with the ships, stopping at the Canary Islands for a month. The ships left the Canary Islands on September 3,1492.
  • He travelled with three ships: The Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria
  • While Columbus was an Italian, he could not find funding in Italy, so he turned to the King of Spain. King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella provided the funding.
  • He did not land on the U.S. mainland. He landed on an island in the Caribbean. While many believe he landed on San Salvador, there is still debate on which island he originally landed on.
